Fire & Wood 2021

This Bank Holiday Weekend, during our Fire & Wood event, a traditional charcoal burn will be taking place at the Dean Heritage Centre. We are one of the only places in the country where you can still see a traditional charcoal burn in progress which takes place across the three days.  Expert volunteers will be on hand to explain the process of transforming locally sourced wood into charcoal and give an insight into the life of a charcoal burner. Discover how this ancient tradition was an integral part of the iron industry in the Forest of Dean and now produces what is considered to be the best barbeque charcoal around!

With other activities going on Fire & Wood is an event the whole family can enjoy. Clayton, our site manager will be performing daily chainsaw carving demonstrations, pyrography artist Joanne Ryder and charcoal artist Amanda Cox will be here each day and our facilitators will be leading fire & wood themed activities for visitors to take part in. The craft hut will be open, trails available to help you explore and gallery activities to keep younger visitors entertained whilst you delve into the history & heritage of the Forest of Dean.

Little Owlets are joining us on Saturday and an art exhibition by Chris Sinden and Jackie Cox is opening for a two week show in the Meeting Room.

The Coffee Shop will be open and serving their delicious pulled pork and stuffing rolls alongside the usual menu. Tables are now available inside the Coffee Shop as well as on the balcony overlooking the millpond. We also have lots of tables around the site with prime spots around the pond where you can spend time watching the wildlife whilst enjoying your picnic.

It’s a great day out for all the family!
