History & Heritage

With around 20,000 artefacts in our collection, the Dean Heritage Centre is a truly great resource for exploring the rich history and heritage of the Forest of Dean.

The Museum has a varied collection of historic objects, covering subjects such as archaeology, the coal mining and iron making industry, transport, childhood history, music and even costume!
All of these interesting artefacts are based in five modern galleries housed in a former Mill building, complete with its own running waterwheel.

Major treasures detailing the history and heritage of the Forest of Dean include a working Beam Engine, Sopwith's unique geological model of the Forest of Dean depicting the ground beneath us and an extensive collection of locally made Voyce clocks.
